What Is a DD-214?
The DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) is the official document issued to every service member upon separation from the military. It records your dates of service, discharge characterization, military occupational specialty, awards, and other critical information.
The DD-214 is required for virtually every veteran benefit: VA disability claims, GI Bill education benefits, VA home loans, healthcare enrollment, state veteran benefits, and employment preference.
DD-214 Copy Types
The DD-214 comes in multiple copies, and the differences matter significantly for VA claims:
Member 1 (Short Form)
- Given to every service member at separation
- Contains basic information: name, dates of service, discharge characterization
- Does NOT include the reason for discharge, reenlistment code, or separation code
- Sufficient for some benefits (GI Bill, home loan) but NOT ideal for disability claims
Member 4 (Long Form)
- The most complete version of the DD-214
- Includes all information from Member 1 PLUS: reason for separation, separation code, reenlistment eligibility code, and narrative reason for discharge
- Required for VA disability claims — the VA needs the separation details to verify eligibility
- Contains character of discharge, which determines VA benefit eligibility
- Shows awards and decorations that can support combat-related claims
Key Difference:
Member 1: Shows you served from 2010-2014, Honorable Discharge
Member 4: Shows you served from 2010-2014, Honorable Discharge,
Separation Code JBK, RE Code 1,
Narrative Reason: Completion of Required Active Service,
Campaign medals: OEF/OIF,
MOS: 11B Infantryman
The Member 4 details help the VA verify combat service,
MOS-related exposures, and discharge eligibility.
Other Copy Types
- Member 2 — Filed at the service member's home of record (county recorder's office)
- Member 7 — Filed at the service member's duty station
- Copy 5 — Sent to the VA automatically (but may not arrive)
- Copy 6 — Sent to the state VA office
Why Member 4 Is Required for VA Claims
The VA needs the Member 4 copy because it contains information critical to determining eligibility:
- Character of discharge — Honorable and General (Under Honorable) discharges are eligible for most VA benefits. Other Than Honorable (OTH) may require a character of discharge determination
- Separation code and RE code — Help the VA understand the circumstances of your discharge
- Campaign medals and service ribbons — Combat-related awards can support presumptive conditions (PTSD, agent orange exposure, burn pit exposure)
- MOS/Rating/Specialty — Your military job can establish exposure to hazards, noise, chemicals, or physical demands that caused your conditions
- Foreign service dates — Establish theater of operations for combat presumptives

Frequently Asked Questions
- I lost my DD-214. How do I get a replacement?
- Request a replacement through the National Archives (eVetRecs at archives.gov/veterans) by submitting SF-180. You can also try milConnect for an instant digital copy if your records have been digitized. There is no charge for veterans requesting their own records.
- How long does it take to get a DD-214 copy?
- Online through milConnect: instant to a few days. Through the National Archives (SF-180): typically 2-4 weeks for recent service, potentially months for older records. The 1973 NPRC fire destroyed many Army and Air Force records from 1912-1964.
- Can I file a VA claim with Member 1?
- You can submit a claim with Member 1, but the VA may request the Member 4 copy before completing your claim. Filing with Member 4 from the start avoids delays. If you only have Member 1, file anyway — the VA can sometimes pull your records internally.
- What if my DD-214 has errors?
- You can request a correction through the Board for Correction of Military Records (BCMR) for your branch. Common errors include incorrect discharge characterization, missing awards, and wrong dates of service. Corrections can take several months.
- Is my DD-214 public record?
- In some states, the Member 2 copy filed with the county recorder is a public record. The Member 4 with its detailed service information should be protected. Be cautious about who you share your DD-214 with — it contains enough personal information for identity theft.
